Scientifically speaking, if I went to a planet that had a g value several times that of earth and spent a year doing physical training, would I be much stronger than anyone on earth when I come back and by how much?

Well in DBZ, keep in mind that Vegeta and Goku are aliens from a planet with might stronger gravity than earth, and that for them earth's gravity is like walking on the moon. For them training in high-gravity settings is essential. Youu don't ever see humans training in these high-gravity settings, because they are not physically built to survive in those settings.
