you can think of genes as having 2 different components
additive and non additive effects
additive is what you normally think of, the tall gene the short gene etc
since genes are obviously much more complicated than that, just call the non additive stuff everything else
for example, gene A and gene B could have more of an effect than just the sum of the effects of gene A and B on their own
the arent additive, hence the name
non additive genetics can be thought of as a synergy of genes, like an set bonus in an rpg
so if someone is very far away from the mean, then its likely that they have both extraordinary additive AND non additive effects
but non additive effects are basically randomized at birth, so when they have a kid its unlikely that the kid will also have extraordinary non additive effects, hence they regress to the mean
but this works the other way too
a fairly mediocre person could have a kid with extraordinary non additive effects and so they would depart from the mean
note, extraordinary could also mean in the bad direction, making a retard
