Why wasn't the rocket equation thought up earlier? was there just not the chemistry available?
I'm surprised the Chinks didn't come up with it, given that they had a rocket tradition and since they had access to Western mathematics since Shreck in the early 1600s.

The rocket equation has very little use outside of space travel. They wouldn’t even be able to quantify gravity, atmosphere, and cosine losses without modern instrumentation, so even if they could get a number, it wouldn’t be particularly accurate.
