So at first glance you see a large division in the middle which they use it to distinguish it laterally, aka Left and Right. There are more ways to distinguish certain areas whether that be front - back (cerebrum - cerebellum), anatomical references (like occipital, frontal, temporal, etc), or their many physiological portions.
