There's tons of reasons why IQ is so flimsy, there's tons of documented issues such as things as simple as being coached on effective test taking strategies significantly increasing scores. Studies trying to determine the effectiveness of "cognitive training" found they had massive gains on IQ tests (they weren't even directly training to the test) Anecdotally, one of the easiest ways to score better is to have someone sit down and explain the logic behind the pattern recognition portions, at the fundamental level every question has nearly identical logic and as long as you know how to think like the person who wrote the test it'll say you're a genius.
