Humans are very sight-centric, our primary sense is sight, which is why we are active in the day.
Many animals are active at night, and those primarily use a sense of smell. Even your dog, or a cat. Actually most mammals primarily use a sense of smell rather than sight, which is why their sight is inferior.
It does not apply to birds of prey, because they obviously can't smell much way above the ground, so it's pointless to their hunting efforts, and eyesight gives them a huge advantage.
