no, you do not become smarter. at best, you become better at solving the type of problems they give you, but not your problem solving skills in general.
a similar critique applies to IQ tests, being that a set of tests 1. cannot be comprehensive enough to test all forms of intelligence 2. can be trained on to become better, despite general intelligence not becoming better
the rationale of such a term (general intelligence) was since people found that faculties of intelligence were correlational, ex: good language skills were /usually/ correlated to good math skills, and so on so forth
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N-back#Use_in_tutoring_and_rehabilitationyou can prevent/dramatically slow dementia using your brain yes, but mostly by using many part of your intelligence (whatever that may mean). you will notice that care centres for older people generally do not aid in the patrons with daily tasks even if they struggle with it a little. the reasoning is that if they do help, there is a chance that they lose that skill slowly. the same sorta with dementia.
having consistent healthy relationships also would do wonders
also, allegedly fish oils help. but i'm talking out of my ass on this one
