I think women being constantly told that rape is the most terrible thing, that they ought to be terrified of it, that they can expect to be completely destroyed by it, and that going on with their life after it is an extraordinary heroic feat, ultimately was just setting them up to be traumatized. A self-fulfilling assertion.
Additionally, some victims now feel ashamed for not being traumatized, because now if their self-worth, morale or feminity is not destroyed by such an awful thing, that implies they had none to begin with, or that they're awful themselves.
But I also think that despite that a majority of women do not get serious trauma from rape, and that this is why most victims don't press charges and prefer to sweep it under the rug.
