You’re not that special. Esters are a really common objective for amateurs, because of interesting smells and they can easily be made. Admittedly, hobby chemistry is not as popular as it was 80 years ago. These days nerds tend to gravitate toward computers instead of science. And hobby chemistry certainly has some legal and safety considerations that deter a lot fo people. Not to mention most low-hanging fruit discoveries haVe already been thoroughly studied in the field, so your unlikely to make any meaningful discoveries at home without a multi million dollar lab. But there are still hundreds of people on the sciencemadness forum doing interesting chem projects at home like that. I goofed around a bit in high school making rockets and random synths. It can be a rewarding hobby, but yeah I see why it isn’t super popular. There’s better hobbies

I can commend ochem as a home hobby, especially if you made your own fume hood.
That said, the synthesis itself seems pretty easy. It's hard to do anything worth bragging about at home unless you're dedicated enough to have your own equipment and shit.
Now if you made azo dye, or anything that'll get fucked up with water, I'll give kudos to that.

Technically, by the definition of the word, if I was the only one in the world who made butyl salicylate at home, I would be special. Being special is not always an outstanding thing. Anyone can be special by inventing a new sentence that is very unlikely to have been uttered before. "Hey man, I smoked so much weed that I climbed inside an elephant's stomach and snorted coke off the stomach lining."

I do not think this is true, it is about dedication. Mixing shit together for no reason is not something that occurs nearly enough in institutional laboratories.

There was so many amateur chemists dicking around from the 1850s-1950s I really doubt you discover much. It really is an amateur science that is almost completely exhausted. That being said, i think the sciencemadness forum I was talking about has discovered a couple new synthesis routes, but nothing groundbreaking

People who say home "chemists" can discover a lot probably have never done a complicated synthesis process before or used the equipment needed for it. Home chemists don't have NMR, XRD, SEM, etc to even verify the things they make, let alone a fume hood.
