Anyone on /sci/ have phd qualifying exams coming up? Whats up with this shit? Is it just a sneaky way to get rid of the students they don't want? Stress is killing me

I had mine last year. Only a couple people failed and I think everyone who failed the first time passed on the second attempt (we get two chances to pass before getting the boot). I think the exams are just a convenient way to force people into actually learning their shit.

The month before each of my exams were the worst two months of my adult life (have an abusive alcoholic dad, so I've had worse in my childhood). They are partly to weed out people, but also they make sure the students are up to snuff on the fundamentals, especially for teaching and TAing and stuff like that. At least in math, theres well defined fundamentals that I agree every PhD student should know. With that said, one of my brightest peers failed his first attempts, but he made it through his second. He's a lot smarter than me too, so dont overvalue the quals. I've also never personally seen anyone get kicked out from them, but it happens occasionally and have seen someone drop out because of the equals.

For some additional insight, I had 6 committee members. My institution required written AND oral exams. It was exhausting.
