Proof by infinite descent

Im reading book related and Im at a part where they explain how Fermat used "Proof by infinite descent" to prove that X^4 + Y^4 = Z^4 has no integer solutions. I cant understand how showing that an equation doesn't have infinite solutions is proof that it has none. Can anyone explain this?

Ive already tried searching it up and this is not homework or anything I just want to know.
