We found out pretty early on that digital outperforms analog easily unless the design is massively, massively parallel. This is because getting even ten bits of perfectly accurate resolution out of an analog ALU with even MHz speeds is basically impossible. Noise fucks you right in the ass and analog systems do have plenty of propagation delay which means you have to wait to sample the output, and that delay is enough to make fast switching digital blow analog away.
