Usually people lack basic algebraic manupulation and doesn't have a good grasp of trig before getting into calculus. If you haven't done calculus yet, try learning it through Thoma's calculus book. The first chapter is usually basic definition that aren't included in the stewart's calculus. If you do all the exercise you should have a solid fundation for moving on. If you've already pass calculus, it's mostly getting used to read proof and writting proof. When you're good at it, everything is less intimidating to approach.
