What is the true biological purpose of the human endocannabinoid system?
Surely the brain didn't evolve to consume marijuana.
Is it just a coincidence that the brain has receptors for cannabinoid and marijuana is filled with them?

This was poorly worded.
I meant that "surely the brain didn't evolve *explicitly* to consume marijuana. It's obvious that it didn't evolve *not* to consume it, or there would be more detrimental side effects

Maybe so it could be harvested and planted? I doubt it because agriculture is a relatively new phenomenon on evolutionary scales but maybe.

plants were there much before than us probably. the smell is the more important sense in (almost) all living creatures. The animals picked the language of the plants, in a way. So, it's not rare this affinity.

Cannabinoids are part of the system of the cannabis in a fundamental level, as any terpenes is to any plants (at least that I've studied). They are part of the immune system, play a role in communication, attraction, and a lot of different things.
Science has no clue about it, it seems.

we call it the endocannabinoid system because we discovered that it is effected by cannabinoids, thus the name. had we discovered it prior to the cannabinoids, it would be called something else. you evolved independently of cannabis. its just coincidence that the cannabinoids effect these same receptors as other natural neurotransmitters.
