If space is expanding at an accelerating pace, wouldn't the expansion inevitably reach light speed? Even if it accelerated at 0.001G it would reach light speed quite fast indeed.

please don't derail my thread, I only used that pic because Greene mentioned the accelerating expansion in the JRE podcast. Or is the notion of accelerating expansion exclusive to string theory?

As for your question, do you know what redshifting is? It is the observation that objects farther away seem to have longer wavelengths. This is evidence that acceleration is both happening and increasing. Eventually, acceleration will indeed be faster than the speed of light, at which point the light from other galaxies will never reach us.

How large is the acceleration? That's what is bothering me. Wouldn't any meaningful acceleration reach light speed very quickly in the cosmic scale. Even microscopic acceleration would reach light speed in a few million years.

the short answer is yes. after a long time our galaxy’s gravitational field will be strong enough to hold it together and counteract the small cosmological constant, but all other galaxies will recede past the cosmological event horizon i.e. they will be moving away from us faster than light and will be forever inaccessible, assuming the cosmological constant is a constant. further out in time it’s less certain but the baseline hypothesis is that radiation (EM and gravitational wave acceleration) will continue to decelerate the galaxy until it collapses into the galactic center’s black hole and eventually all that will be left is the black hole. then as the universe keeps expanding the vacuum of space will be colder than the black hole and hawking radiation will cause the black hole to evaporate into radiation until nothing is left. or rose has theorized that eventually all the massive particles will disappear during this process and then the concept of time breaks down (you need massive particles to build a clock) so at this point time basically ends

no because you only ever approach the speed of light, time dilation does the rest. however things will move apart "faster" than the speed of light, so the stars will slowly disappear in the sky

Well, that will require experiments to disprove them. They will then be among the many scientists who pushed science forward by mistakes. Much like the Aether theorists.

Yes, this means our cosmic horizon in space has a limit. Although, some hypothesize that spacetime bubbles still arise out of the quantum foam, meaning novelty can arise out of a bubble that has inflated out all outer galaxies.

Yes. Space can do whatever the hell it wants, unconstrained by c.
There will be a time when all galaxies will think they're a single lone galaxy, floating in infinite space. Kind of how we thought 100 years ago.
Future lifeforms living in galaxies will discover relativity and quantum mechanics but develop a completely wrong picture of what the universe is. Falsifiable science will give the wrong answers but to those future observers, they will be the right answers.
Think about that.

The expansion is at 68 kilometers per second per 3.26 million light-years. It's small. Keep in mind light travels like 300,000 kilometers in a second for reference.

Almost everything we see in the sky as stars is contained within our galaxy and will not disappear due to cosmic expansion.
