It's okay, still science related. /g/ is for consoomers to discuss their latest iphone purchase; for the most part they know little about the actual technology.
First year IT, I highly recommend Google's IT Support program. It is a new cert program by Google that they've been trying to push for entry level IT workers. The course is currently free I believe, but when it's not it's also one of the cheapest certs at only $50 (you go at your own pace and if you finish it in 2 weeks it's free, 1 month it's $50, and each consecutive month it's $50 more). The course is somewhat simple but thorough for beginners; it's on Coursera and you read through their study guides and videos and then take multiple choice tests to proceed. In my opinion it's much better and more modern then the A+ cert and was more respected when I was looking for an entry level job. It will teach you a very good amount of fundamental topics in IT (though it will not go advanced, mostly entry level learning), and will help in getting your first job, which will hit 2 birds with 1 stone since it'll be study material for college and will be your first cert if you want to get a job during college. I personally liked the course, and you can stop it at any time since it's in 5 parts, so you can just do part 1and quit if you want, and all for free.
Another great resource is "Powercert Animated Videos" on YouTube. I loved this channel when I was just starting. It gives great information for beginners with really helpful videos, and the guy is really concise.
