The second one would be more reasonable if you're not into the whole "schizo" theory of the matrix per say. I'd imagine that in both theoretical approaches it'll be "game over" both ways. After civilization reaches it's peak into the advancement of technology and scientific discovery, i'd imagine that all would begin to get bored. I doubt us as humans would even reach that point anyways as the advancement in technology would allow the government, (or ordinary intellects) reach a great sense of power, resulting in some sort of warfare. There's many ways it could play out, both theories are possible.
