How do I get better at chess? I've been playing since I was a kid but I can't seem to really get past 2100 classical by much. I can calculate quite a few positions in advance with some accuracy (I'd say maybe like 7-10 depending on the position) but I want to join FIDE and become titled. Please give me pointers.

lichess classical ratings are very inflated compared to fide btw, that might only be the equivalent of 1800.
All ratings on lichess are inflated, but it's worse the slower the time control.
How's your rapid or blitz rating?

Yeah I hear lichess/chess.com ratings are all nflated. Rapid is about the same but I typically play 15+10. In the hours rapid tournaments which are 10+0, I often rank in the top 20 (highest ever was 8th place).

Excuse the typos. Also I don't really place blitz. I used to but it made me get into the bad habit of moving pieces too fast even when the games were not blitz honestly.

Does playing rapid make you better or just showcases skill and rapid thought more? I like to think about a multitude of moves but to the masters it seems its all tactics and patterns.

I think at below-master level, rapid can definitely improve your skills and pattern recognition. Deep calculation is not really possible in rapid, but that isn't as important as positional sense and tactical awareness for amateur players.

How the fuck can you get at 2000ELO while only calculating 7-10 moves ? Most of my openings are at least this deep and I'm stuck at like 1100

2. how deep you calculate doesn't determine nearly as much in a chess game as you seem to believe. it's more important to be familiar with tactics, strategy and positional advantages.
3. you seem to fail to understand what is meant by calculating 7-10 moves ahead. certainly not how deep you remember openings to.

you are at the point where you need to add specialist knowledge and iron-clad technique
1. Deepen your opening preparation, and know the strategic ideas of the resulting middlegames
2. Get the common endgames down cold, especially rook and pawn endings.
3. Aim not just for large advantages, but for a tiny persistent edge that you carry into the endgame

Sorry I didn't check the thread. Going from 1200-2100 is doable of course but will take some time. For me I was stuck at 1800 for a while before getting up to 1900+ on lichess. I managed to get past 2000 rating primarily by studying the games of Mikhail Tal and Alekhine. Check out MatoJelic on youtube, he has really great games. Also a really helpful thing was anlayzing the games I lost (and won too sometimes but mostly the games I lost) to see where I went wrong, and with that in mind trying to avoid making those types of mistakes in future games. But of course if you're tired or a bit drunk do your best to avoid playing rated games lol.

Thank you anon, I will follow this advice. I fucking loath rook and pawn endgames. A weakness for me that needs to be improved on for sure.
