If you understand proofs, Lang is better. Gelfand is more for kids. Engineering Mathematics by K. A. Stroud is a better alternative to both.

unless you only care about theory and proofs in which case Stroud's book is not good. But if you actually want to learn maths skills without bothering with proofs and theory too much then go for Strouds book.

if you already know elementary math (for the most part at least) and are just wanting to have fun, it's not a meme.

if you suck at elementary math and are trying to improve/learn, these books are always a meme. in that case you're better off just cracking open a modern calculus book like James Stewart's and chugging through the prereq chapters. All the voids in your knowledge will be filled as you go, and you'll be learning calculus. if you get stuck on shit just look it up (like trig identities and such).

Gelfand and Lang are the most useful books written at the level of the average european american without a college education. If we replaced the whole of highschool mathematics with just those two books our standing as an intellectual culture would improve astronomically. People unwilling to learn basic trigonometric and algebraic identities don’t deserve to learn Calculus or anything more complicated than operating a cash register.

I'm actually wanting to learn some computation skills and proofs at the same time. I'm going to be starting calc 1 soon as a math undergrad, but I'm not confident in my trig skills.

Try Spivak, imo. Great book. At least check out the first 2-3 chapters if you want to be a math major. And don't fret about trig skills, you'll know what you need to know come exam time unless you aren't even trying

Are you the OP? If so don't spend time with an elementary book like Basic Mathematics, your time would be better spent familiarizing yourself with the book your going to be using for Calc 1 along with the content it covers. You can look proofs and stuff if you want, of course.

Absolutely, he's got a interesting argument with the finitism, but I'd personally discard it for learning purposes, or just make your own conclusions lol. Being said that, his vids on algebra, trig, and other shit are solid imho.

You can teach from Lang's book to a motivated 10 year old if they already understand their multiplication tables and if you take out a piece of paper and show them what triangles and graphs are. It is a book intended for the absolutely uninitiated in mathematics which is why it begins with arithmetic lmao
