Disclaimer: This is not homework. This is a sample question that is part of an aptitude test for a job interview.
Now, I've had a go at this myself. I've arrived at the quadratic 2x^2 - 34x + 144 = 0 and I've successfully factorised it in both possible ways, taking 16 and 18 as the factors and switching where I place those numbers in my bracketed factors. My issue though is that the question doesn't list neither 18 nor 16 as possible answers and they would clearly be the "larger values". So I just don't understand what to do here.
Solving this is one thing but, how does one actually answer the question? Is it even a comprehensible question?
