Just pirate it or use octave. I've heard it is very similar though I've never used either. It would probably be more fun to program in something else so maybe give python a try then move on from there.

For real. I did applied math when I went to college, and I had about two proof based courses. Obviously I had some control over this, but I was a know-nothing so I really didn't realize what I was missing until later on.

Octave as the exact same syntax. It just does not implement every function but I'd say you'll be fine in 90% of cases.
Also it's slower than MATLAB.

I would advise you to go for python, you'll find a lot of books too.

R is specialized for stats but it is a scientific computing language, there are packages for a diverse range of applications. Of course you could also try Sage math, I have never used it but I've heard good things.

If you want to do scientific programming, learn python. Seriously, don't fucking waste your time with matlab. I say this as someone who used matlab for all of undergrad because that's all my shitty program formally taught us. I finally started working in python when I came to grad school, and jesus christ it's like night and day. Matlab is so pitifully limited in comparison.
