It will obviously help in modifying embryos that have know defects (screening and discarding can achieve the same efficacy).
As for introducing new genetic combinations, it will mostly be long slow guesswork that won't be much better than the randomness that nature implements.
Modifying organisms that reproduce and mature rapidly will be more fruitful because you will be able to identify the effects of your tampering more quickly and you can leverage natural selection to find stable optimums that incorporate your modifications.
