Because the Fields mean nothing to someone of that caliber. Mathematicians already know him and by declining he generated even more notoriety.

I mean that's stupid, he's only just come into his adult years, invents one of the building blocks of modern mathematics, then just kicks the bucket in some duel with the village bully. Imagine what he could've done if he kept on living, he would put Euler to shame
