Universities have become a toxic and anti-intellectual place. You don't want to socialize with these people. My recommendation is to stay away from university whenever you can. Learn the contents on your own, only go to the exams, avoid lectures whenever possible, make some friends outside of university whose mind hasn't been poisoned yet.

wtf weird, I even live in Sweden and most of my friends I've met at my uni don't usually talk about politics other than that the soc dems suck. they would never start caring about American politics either. try meeting people outside of some boring whatsapp chat, are there no interesting chapters at your uni?

What about you just stand for your opinion instead of being a coward and hiding for it? You will be surprised how far people will bend to please you if you are a little confident.
Students are a relative weak demographic in the sense that they are dependent on governmental help, so that makes them more often left wing. Just show them the right(tm) way, by working next to your study and be responsible. Show them your perspective is more functional in your daily life. It is not even that hard.

Personally ask physics student their political opinion and you won’t find a good correlation. Physics teaches nothing of morality or ethics. You might be biasing your opinion from a handful of students who happen to be very voiceful of their opinions, generally these voices are “politically correct” as those that aren’t must debate as a minority, which will require strong rhetoric. Needless to say, this is not a skill physicists are trained in.

There is your problem. Typically you need to wait a few semesters until the sub IQ people filter themselves as they start to fail exams. They only exist for the University to earn some extra money. When i got my Bachelor in Computer Science only about ~20% of everyone who started with me were left. In the final semester of my brother who studied Engineering only ~15% were left. I don't know about Physics but i don't think it's easier than Computer Science or Engineering.

Seems you are unlucky. Am studying physics for a bit now and discussions about new developments, major breakthroughs or other topics like mathematics or programming are not uncommon in my friend group.

Politics are also often on the table. It just comes with thinking about things that are interesting and a good bunch of us being politically active.

Try to start a discussion yourself and see who passionately joins. There are commonly those that are most interested in either QM, or Astrophysics and then those that just started bc they liked it in school. The first two are those you seek.

To be fair a lot of those that leave just did not find what they thought it would entail or just did not have any clue on what to do with their lives till uni.

Although learning to study can be a bitch if you never did a thing for school. At least that's true for me. Getting one of the best or the best A-level in your school that year is a joke for all that stuck around at uni.
Learning to learn is quite hard.

Knowing you don't know what you are talking about but still talking about it is fine as long as you are not afraid to say you don't know, bc you don't. And thinking that you will get much closer to that point during a BSc is also wishful thinking.
