I was watching this lecture on schizophrenia by this jew Sapolsky and a thing he said confused me.
He's talking about the hypothesis that was prevailing at the time that schizophrenia was caused by a parenting style. (time mark at about 1h28min).
He says that when the first medication came out that effectively treated schizophrenia
>at that point, if one had any capacity to face reality, all of the proponents of the schizophrenogenic mothering should have been shocked and stopped in their feet at that point saying my god, what have we done? It's a biochemical disorder! It is not a disorder of mothers who are not competent mothers.
Now my question is, what the fuck is he talking about? How does finding a drug for it invalidate in any way the hypothesis that parenting style could be an important cause in schizophrenia?
Is it impossible that parenting style influences anything about the biochemistry of the brain? The brain is so complex that it to me there's no way that the parenting style has 0 influence on the biochemistry of the developing brain.
