A globally (as in the globe) interconmected set of electronic devices through a multi-hop network (meaning they're not (couldn't possible be) all directly connected to one another, but instead rely on intermediate nodes) transmitting information through a set of protocols (rules) tu carry such communication. The large majority of these devices are merely terminals attaching to the network, some are servers that store most of the info those terminals are looking for (and to which the also upload more information). Actually the majority may actually be infrastructure, nodes whose only purpose is to route those packets of information.
What you and I care about is both the servers and the nature of that information. Honestly the internet is not that different from human culture as we've known it for millenia, but it's globalized and communication is nearly instantaneous.
It's not a "space" in the physical sense of the word, as many like to picture it. But it is a sort of abstract reality , it being in the collective consciousness much like, again, language, and culture.
