aptitude is inherited, intelligence is also largely genetic but ultimately it's the result of the interplay between genes and environment. intelligence dictates the limit of your aptitude. they're not opposites, but they're two different concepts. why exactly would we have two words for the exact same thing?

Aptitude is a function of both genes and nurture. Do you think somebody with great athletic genes will have a good athletic aptitude if they are constantly malnourished as a child?

Intelligence is no different from any other aptitude in this respect.

Intelligence is a subset of aptitude. Aptitude could also apply to athleticism and other traits, not just intelligence. But generally I think of aptitude as being more specific to skill sets.

You could frame actualized intelligence as a set of skills in performing various sorts of mental tasks.

Well skills are learned, aptitude is the ability to quickly acquire those skills. That could be in mathematics, basketball, or learning a musical instrument. Intelligence and aptitude would be fairly interchangeable for learning mathematics, not so much for basketball.

that's because aptitude is not separate from intelligence, but it is different. if someone is born with great athleticism genes and they're naturally strong and healthy but they refuse to develop their potential further, would you be able to deny their potential?

I can't teach my dog mathematics because his intelligence limits his aptitudes.

Intelligence is different from aptitude in the same way that a square is different from a rectangle. Do you understand how sets work?

that's exactly my point. except i'm saying that aptitude is a subset of intelligence, not vice versa. the reason why someone who is very apt at sports isn't interested in science is because he doesn't understand science. Intelligence is the determining factor of aptitude, not vice versa. otherwise bouncing a ball up and down and shooting hoops like a retard wouldn't be of interest to anyone who has an aptitude for sports.

It's not. An aptitude for swimming is not a subset of intelligence.

Intelligence is a subset of aptitude, not the other way around.

also, someone with greater intelligence has innately more potential for a multitude of aptitudes. bodily-kinesthetic intelligence is a function of aptitude derived from the intellect.
