When I did precalculus in school for example I easily passed but I honestly never really understood what I was doing, just copied the teacher and remembered what to do. f(x) = x^2 + 3x + 1 just looked like a random abstract nothing to me that I knew what to do with but when thinking of it as an actual thing, and visually moving all of the component in my mind around until they build something helps seeing what's actually going on.
Wish I would have developed this thought process earlier but happy I have it now at least.
