And your consciousness sort of interprets these memories by creating a story out of them and that's why you feel like you had some kind of story.
Dreams can vary a lot based on when you have them too, it depends on when you wake up.
You CAN dream even if you don't remember dreaming at all, some people misconceive this and will think they didn't dream when they in fact did, they just forgot their dream because you need to wake up during the dream or just after the dream to be able to remember it.
Also, you only remember the most recent dreams you had after waking up.
How a dream works is probably something like this:
Your brain goes through recent and old memories and it activates them or fucks around with them in some manner, most likely to sort them or move them around or something, either way, whatever maintenance is happening, it causes memories (neurons) to be activated in the process,
for example,
while asleep your brain will start activating random memories like that time 10 years ago you drank some milk, and then maybe that time you played a video game about dragons and maybe the time you pulled the weeds and when you wake up you will remember your dream as you pulling weeds while a dragon was breathing milk onto some people nearby or something like that.
