Consider the coronavirus that's fucking everyone right now; it has no "purpose" in the teleological sense. It's just a string of nucleotides that ended up being arranged in such a way that it ended up being able to make copies of itself in this current environment. It doesn't consciously think about copying itself; it doesn't actually think at all because it's not really even a living thing; it's a natural phenomenon. Given the right circumstances this strand of genetic material just endlessly uses proteins in its environment to surround and replicate itself to no end. It doesn't make sense to ask why it does this; because given what it is and what our world is; it actually has no choice.
