/sci/ I am a senior in college on my way to earning my geology BS. Most of the profs at my university so planetary science research, so that is the path I’ve been on, but I hear so many horror stories about PhDs. Any geospergs here with advice? If i were in Texas or Louisiana, economic geology would be the norm and big companies like exxon mobil would recruit. But here more students go work with JPL and do planetary stuff. What’s the move? Do I keep going down planetary geology as an extremely specialized autist or do I just get a masters and shoot my shot in oil and gas? I feel like the oil and gas community would be a lot harder for me to fit in as a sperg than planetary stuff because a lot of people working in space exploration are def a bit autisto as well and that’s probably where I’d be better off. People say PhDs are worthless and academia is dying, but a PhD seems necessary for planetary science and the field is lacking the competition that more popular STEM majors compete for (biology, chemistry, comp sci etc.). IME geologists with funding are happy to take a passionate student over a competitive one. Do I do planetary sperg sci or sellout to oil and gas?
