What is the point of an ISP? Why not have client computers connect directly to different companies servers and cut out the middle man? People can then pay exactly what they want in service to who they want.This would also significantly decrease the internets carbon footprint.

In the US at least. People do not trust the government to handle the internet. They'll scream censorship, throttling, spying, and more. Political parties will play brinkmanship and under fund areas so that the internet is much like our current roads in quality.

Our current system could be a lot better and the government does need to step it up, but total control isn't the answer.

because we live in a capitalist society. we decided only necessary things like roads and some utility to be full government control or basically full government control. internet for the common citizen is technically a not a necessary thing at least we still handle it that way same as TV. Internet to homes being necessary gets kind of complicated since do you really need internet in your home? why cant you go to a public library and use a computer there. you dont need to use it everyday like you need to shower or need water for cooking. if you need it everyday you probably have enough money to afford it the internet itself. this is why we still have private isps.

Gov also has no reason to innovate and improve its product. ISPs do. What should happen is the gov should step in and be the ISP in locations where private isn't an option or shit choices (satellite) is the only one for high speed. Second, they need to stop throwing cash at ISPs and getting nothing in return. That would inspire smaller ISPs to spring up and not dom the space.

why is money the only incentive for innovation? The government can contract research since this will help the environment but in general the government would be making much more money since it would be concentrated on fewer companies providing networks, plus the cables are getting so lightweight and fast its probably less cost effective to have a middle port like ISPs
