Why do mammals and birds have REM stages in sleep? What is the point of this sleep phase "distinguishable by random/rapid movement of the eyes, accompanied with low muscle tone throughout the body, and the propensity of the sleeper to dream vividly". The best theories, aiding memory and the ontogenic theory, fail in explaining most characteristics of REM and are not convincing.
