Why do smart people always say the phrase “it turns out”.

This is such a common tick/habit among smart people and seemingly only smart people. They are explaining some shit and always say “it turns out”. Whereas when less intelligent people explain things, they don’t use this phrase.

They're talking down to you. It turns out that intelligent people often hear really stupid things from average people who want to argue over things they emotionally feel must be correct. Intelligent people learn to start couching their statements in face saving phrases so the stupid person doesn't melt down. "It turns out" insinuates that lots of people also believe the stupid thing the moron believes. This helps protect their ego from what's coming next, the truth rather than the moron's emotional belief.

You're young and just getting your head around certain storytelling phrases which have evolved with cause. Once you actually start working you'll pick up on more business-speak phrases such as "to your point". These phrases are commonly understood and often repeated, but some of them do have value. When an academic or smart guy uses "it turns out" in good faith, what he means is to illustrate for a class of students or an academic audience, that such-and-such which was previously unknown or thought untrue, is now known to be true because of such-and-such study. Likewise the banal phrase "to your point" is meant to validate the other person as a participant in the conversation, get back to what they were actually talking/asking about, and bring it back to such-and-such business interest, if the phrase is used in an ordinary business-speak context, which is often is.

I was going to write something similar to this, but you summed it up pretty well.

I'll give my own experience.

I spoke with a guy who said "cold weather causes colds". I told him it's not true, that viruses cause colds. He started to defend what he said:
- It's common sense
- My mother told me it was true (his mother died when he was a child)
- Bringing up anecdotal experience

I asked him if his mother had a medical degree, to which he told me she was illiterate, i shit you not.
He also comes from a third world country and is in his 60s.

He started to get upset about it.
One time he overheard other people making a joke at his expense, someone said they were ill, and the other person said "did you go out in the cold with wet hair?" (a reference to what the old guy said). A bunch of laughter was had, then a few days later the old guy starts bitching about not being respected

None of this means you're smart, it just means you memorized facts. Every midwit who reads knows viruses cause colds. I see this a lot in kids who are slightly above average and studious, they stamp collect "smart sounding" facts and just spout them off, and the cooing of female adults reinforces their false belief that they are geniuses. Then when they get to college age, they have to wrestle with the fact that are actually well read idiots.

My aptitude tests for university entry, and my enrolment at top universities (globally) indicate I’m intelligent. But I’m not going to post that evidence here, because I don’t care about impressing a random anon

I was simply indicating that, as a means of bypassing the emotional reaction unintelligent people get when their lack of intellect and knowledge is exposed, it is easier to just make a concession to their ego by saying “it turns out”.
I gave an example of an elderly man who has gotten emotionally upset when his lack of knowledge and intellect has been exposed several times, and gave one of the most recent examples.

You appear to be one of these unintelligent people who got upset by my post, perhaps because you identified with the old man, and are now trying to attack my intellect. Don’t worry, you’ll likely outgrow this stage by the time you turn 25 :)

1) A seemingly intuitive idea has a counter-intuitive counterexample
2) There's a shitload of algebra in between the start of the problem and the end of the problem. The end result is the 'it turns out'.

Idk if this is the answer you wanted but at least it isn't autistic REEEEing like the other posts.

some things really are 'it turns out', like empirical phenomena that have no real deeper explanation (that we know of) ie. physical constants. however, i think the 'talking down to' explanation is slightly more nuanced, because ive definitely had to say it or something very similar when the actual explanation or reason is so unrelated that it wouldn't be practical to go into and as such simply saying 'it turns out' makes whatevera claim that is required for your eplanation irrefutable unless they have direct evidence to the contrary or are familiair with the exact empirical result youre talking about. it also avoids a lot of similarly complicated and irrelevant 'why' questions, which invariably end up with a 'its just the way it is' at the end anyway, so in some sense youre not even 'talking down' to them, just cutting to the chase and saving both of you time. unless the explanation and theory is in itself the goal of the conversation, which it probably isnt.

When talking to dumb people it is not enough to just state the facts. This is because there is also a structure those facts are supposed to fit into ones mind to form a concept. Smart people automatically sort the facts correctly but dumb people can get lost. It turns out is used as the opposite of because when communicating to dumb people so they don't assume that two things told one after another are directly related.
