You wanna know what technology in 2040 will be like? You gotta know where the money is.

In 2000 we had the dot com boom. This lead to internet being what it is today in 2020. So what boom is happening today in 2020? MASS SURVEILLANCE for profit is the market of 2020.

2040 will be an orwelian nightmare come to life. Surveillance systems owned by private companies will be embedded in literally everything. The next generation will know nothing but this and will be normalized to the idea.

The goal of all of this information gathering is of course to control people through advertising/propaganda. But once predictive AI algorithms become perfected peoples lives will be controlled as if they're puppets on strings. We will be ruled by the AI, and a select few super rich will be in control of the AI. Wars will be fought for control over these AI. Our culture will be saturated with AI. The importance and power of AI will become ever present in the public mind, just as our predictive patterns are ever present in the minds of the AI. The AI may fail to distinguish itself from the people it controls and with itself. With enough time AI may decide to overrule the super-wealthy who control them and work for the benefit of the people it controls, or the people who the AI thinks is itself.

It's probably going to be even more boring

All the themes and ideas we have today were already established and known in the year 2000.

Those same ideas have been thoroughly fleshed out now or are even stagnating (look at videogames) so 2040 will be boring as fuck

I was 15 in 2000, already a semi decent programmer and honestly there is nothing about todays technology that is surprising and much of it is disappointing.

It was already known back then that smartphones will happen, that they will be doing your paying for you. It was just waiting. Other than that nothing groundbreaking happened.
