It's just perspective in the 4th dimension. The six distorted cubes are anal9gous to how the four square sides appear distorted on a standard cube, the small cube appears smaller just like the distant square side appears smaller than the closer side.

Not quite... The Pythagorian distances wouldn't measure quite the same as that, but yes a hypercube projected into 3-d space looks that way (the inner cube is a 4-d shadow).

Many intuitions of ordinary $\real^3$ go out the window in higher dimensions too.
