the argument in your pic isn't that wrong, though, at least based on paleoclimate estimates and the little that was known about CO2 sensitivity at the time. CO2 levels between 370-410 ppm were last common during the pliocene, when sea level was ~25 m higher and global temps were between 3 and 4 C higher. The framing that shit would instantly hit the fan is obviously wrong because that's not how the world works. low-lying island nations will absolutely be obliterated by sea level rise over the coming centuries and recent studies have show that the earth is far more sensitive to CO2 than was previously thought, so the 90's likely was the last decade to really prevent "catastrophic" (however you'd like to define that term) climate change.

what point are you trying to prove here? the pliocene was 5 million years ago and no serious climate scientist is proposing sea level increases on par with post-glacial sea level rise. even a small increase in sea level on the order of a meter would be extremely dangerous to small island nations or low-lying coastal regions

So address the core issue: overpopulation. People don't need to live on the coast, 10cm above sea level.

It was an extremely dishonest argument given how little really was known at the time (this is still largely true now). It basically just translates to "give me more funding".

You're absolutely right OP. Sadly this is not only limited to /sci/, the problem with science and what gets attention is that there is no real mechanism for oversight. As anyone really doing scientific work in their little niche is probably one of very few people in the world who best understand that topic. This means that it becomes very easy for these people to lie to themselves/others and often it's just the most vocal and fantastical liars who get talked about the most.
"The Human Brain Project" is one exampüle of this but there are so many.
