Seriously though, where are the "in between" species? For a fish it would be a disadvantage to evolve legs and lungs as long as he is still partially living in water.

Obviously a variety of plants and animals already lived at the edge, below and above sea/river level. If a river periodically ran dry it would boost the promotion of such evolution. We see this today with modern lung fish adapting to such environments.

They could passed through a niche like modern lungfish,at least some of which live
in seasonal bodies of water that dry up part of the time. Or like the walking catfish.
And modern lobe-fin fish have leg bones while being fully aquatic.
