How come the US has 16 times the cases of the UK but only 3.4 times the deaths?

The UK has a higher number of deaths per 1 mil population, so maybe its not that the deaths in the US are unsually low but the UK is unusually high.

Probably because old people likely to die are the low hanging fruit for the disease but younger people are more likely to get infected in the US.

The UK had a big problem with infections in care homes and hospices, to save on hospital beds the government sent infected elderly people with minimal symptoms out of hospitals and back into care homes where they could become superspreaders - it was all over the news in April and May and in July they spent weeks denying it happened.
The US death rate is normal and the UK death rate is abnormally bad.

The US did the same thing but only in a few states so maybe that's the difference. In states like New York and New Jersey where they put infected patients in nursing homes, the death rate might match that of the UK.

If your theory is true this would mean that the excess mortality statistic would drop unusually below the average in the UK for a three-six month period starting sometime between now and next February as the parts where the elderly who would have died soon anyway and contribute to mortality vanishes as per COVID, they are already dead.
Time will tell.
