Smokeless gun powder burns and the more its confined, the higher the pressure and the faster the rate of burn to a point where it burns so fast it appears to "explode"
This is why if you take smokeless gun powder and place in an open area and ignite it burns like a sparkler but in a rifle case with bullet it really burns rapidly simulating an explosion and able to proprel lead slug to great speeds & distances.
Black powder even in an open area if ignited will explode.
