Indians are good at repeating and memorizing things but in real life they're shit, that's why internet is flooded with pajeets making a million tutorials for the same topic, reposting everything that people outside India makes, but their country is just a big pile of cow dung with flies eating around. They are around 1.4 billion but can't produce a single pajeet that can change India.

Short answer is a two parter,

First it's a caste system/ pure numbers game. At over one billion people if the only people who migrate to western countries are the either outliers or highest caste individuals then you're going to get a bunch of capable people. And since you will most likely never see the hundreds of millions of lower caste people (which requires living in India to do so) your perception is warped.

Second spelling bees by themselves aren't academically useful. It's the fact that the parents in question are willing to throw down thousands upon thousands of dollars on study material for academic extracurricular activities in general. Which puts them into a mind set of heavy educational investment.

Spelling bee is a thing just because english is retarded and things are phonetically inconsistent. So this kids are wasting their time by studying something _totally_ irrelevant. Imagine if you could channel their will to study to start introducing them to more advanced mathematics, by the time they get to college, you'd have amazing mathematicians. I feel for the kids, not because their event was cancelled, but because their parents badly adviced them to pursue this dumb dream.
