Supposedly they use resonance to force a vacuum which can surround the craft making its passage through atmosphere frictionless. The discs can control the resonance cavities using fields too complex and high in energy demand for us to duplicate. The triangles supposedly use mechanical methods of controlling the resonance cavity which is susceptible to damage from the resonance and is much less effective than the discs. It supposedly breaks more often and is less reliable. Only really useful for short bursts with a high rate of failure.
Similar concept to the cavitation effect used on some torpedos.
