Since this technology is not even in use/barely invented I think /sci/ is the better board for this then /g/ or /k/

Is laser weaponry really the future? Is it that better than ballistic weapons? Is it energy-viable?

Handheld lasers are meme right now. What's big is vehicle mounted lasers and base defense lasers. Imagine 5 trucks with 20 kw lasers focusing on missiles/mortars/etc.

now that I think about it, aren't chaff grenades/flares designed to create a fog of tiny mirrors suspended in the air? if soldiers were to use laser rifles in combat, a single chaff grenade will turn their own guns against them

one of the problems is, since the earth isn't flat, ballistic projectiles will always out-range a directed energy weapon. rockets or cannon artillery can fire over the horizon

Its never one or other, its always a combination. Lasers are effective short range point defense atm. They can likely be used to zap pirates from mile+ range at seas.

No, because mirrors are cheap to make. Having many soldiers with these guns will not win you a war. But a laser on an big truck or on a satellite for a supprize attack will work.

When you want to learn more: Physics for future presidents is a very nice but old physics lecture series that is free on YouTube and the internet archive. He explains and compares all types of guns and boms in the case you want to expand your knowledge.

for some purposes like shooting down missiles and other things that need precision targeting yes, as a weapon for just blowing things up fuck no

if you're mounting it on a ship or some other vehicle that can carry around a big energy supply sure, but spending a given amount of energy accelerating something dense and pointy into a target will always do far more damage than spending that same amount of energy firing a laser at the target

Like others have said, static and vehcile mounted laser systems are already in use as point defence systems aginst missle weaponry. Theyre very effective in that regard.

Assuming that we can have lasers mounted on combat vehicles like laser tanks or on fighters/bombers without completely making them too heavy to maneuver, you still have something that is less effective then ballistic weaponry.
Remeber that whenever innovation in weaponry is made, there is a rush to counter it. A simple chaff grenade or a smoke screen would diminish the effectiveness of the laser by orders of magnitude. Meanwhile, the only way to stop an 80mm shell is to layer armor or make targeting harder. Also the cost (again assuming no major tech advancement in power generation or storage) would be so high you would never see a return on the battlefield.
