Most civil engineers are construction cucks who get suicidal and unemployed when housing and infrastructure booms are over. Not to mention they don't get to play with fancy technology. Most happy civil engineers work in fields such as coastal engineering or oil and gas.

Civvies can make a lot of money...if they own their own business and do more than the studies and design. Otherwise they don't make very much. You'd be better off just going into the trades if you want to work construction.

Know a guy that is making 500k+ who started as a civvie doing environmental runoff work for a company. He was only making 40k a year. Took out a loan to buy a backhoe, skidsteer and dump truck and after 5 years he's doing great!

Dunno what country you live in, but here working as a structural consultant is lucrative even if you don't have your own practice, and there is generally decent pay and chances to moving up the company ranks if you work as an engineer for a builder (most common scenario). This is without even having to work in infrastructure or other similarly high-budget projects
