If our Universe is a simulation I would guess that it's a simulation of the early development of our species, maybe as a kind of research project into how humanity developed. Maybe we are all University students participating in a massive simulation to understand what life for primitive humans was like?
If a species has the technology to simulate any Universe than it stands to reason they would probably make a perfect Universe where things go wrong, but in a safe controlled way where the "protagonist" never fails. It also seems like most simulated Universes would have technology either on par with or better than that available to the simulators.
Maybe we're all NPC's. Really intelligent NPC's that are self aware, but still just computer generated background characters for someone else's fantasy. Maybe this Universe is created for people like Bill Gates or Jeff Bezos and the vast majority of people are just intelligent pawns for them to manipulate.
It's actually kind of disconcerting. I'm not sure I would be comfortable learning that i'm really just lines of code in a mainframe somewhere, but is definitely a possibility.
