All attempts at excelling in a chosen field and competing with the greatest are really just our genes seeking status/minimising insecurity, because that's what generally attracted pussy and ensured their survival. Progressing in this and gaining esteem/power/rank and overcoming competitors in whatever value system or hierarchy we involve ourselves in is basically what gives us the the feeling of joy, though it is fleeting. When someone says they want to do something 'meaningful' it really just refers to this. Beyond that we still strive for 'lasting greatness' so that our survival instinct is expressed despite knowing death is inevitable, by gaining some sort of pseudo-immortality via our legacy/influence living on as successful memes after we die, in the memories of others.
