I have a degree in Geology, we studied the Salton Sea on a class field trip. It's not a natural lake, it was created when a canal was being carved to the east to bring water from the Colorado River in to California for irrigation which broke back in 1905 and drained into the Salton Sea. Since then efforts were made to preserve the lake as a pleasure spot and several more canals were dug to keep water flowing into the area. This ended in 2003 because of water appropriation rights for the Colorado river. Some efforts have been made to save the lake but these have all failed as most environmental scientists agree that the lake should be allowed to return to its normal cycle and dry up.

What about all the pesticides/other bad stuff that must have gone into the Salton Sea? When the Aral Sea dried up, it left a desert where toxic dust clouds can rise up.
