I like it. There's more funding and better equipment than most academic labs, and I
enjoy the work . Basically I'm just getting paid to do organic synthesis which is something I enjoy. I doubt the work I'm doing is dissimilar to what I would spend most of my time on most PhD programmes anyway, while it's nice not to be working as a slave for some prof.

Did a PhD in physics (but people consider me a mathematican, at least I converse with all the MO academics that are online).
Work in tech now.
Pay is great (in fact, nobody should make that much money for making the world a worse place).
Work is "mathy" (probability theory algorithms), but then again I have a hart time tying it to my interest. I participate in proper math reading groups and do other academic work on the side.
Hard to quit, too.
I'd say find a non-draining job, they exist.

It would be biophysics, synthetic biology, and molecular biology with some Math and Computational bio. Curing aging is centuries away and likely to never happen but you could study things like cell migration patterns during embryogenesis, the physics of movement, muscle function, blood flow etc, and literally countless other topics which are begging to be subjected to mathematical and physical modeling. Computational neuroscience is another good use of brains if you can stomach the vaguery and lack of results. I would agree that aging won't be "cured" for a while, but I still would say there's a realistic chance there will be some therapies within our lifetime that extend our healthy lifespan by ~30 years or so. We already have 9 hallmarks of aging and some of them are being successfully addressed.

Comp Bio is growing very rapidly, probably one of the only subfields of the life sciences that won't contract violently in the next quarter century.

There are different places to run the world. If you went as far as a Ph.D. then you should 100% be in a hedge fund there is literally no excuse for you to be sucking dicks in data science.

But beyond that, there are many paths. In this world, there are two types of jobs
-Decision-making jobs: Jobs where your job is to make decisions and ensure that the money flows to enact those decisions
-Dick sucking jobs: Jobs where money was made to flow into your bank account so that you are there 9 to 5 ready to suck my cock whenever I want.

And right now I am afraid that you are sucking cocks. Unless you are somehow the product owner of your projects (I'm sure you are not) then you are there to suck the product owner's big fat cock and swallow all the cum and in the end, the product owner will be the one who reaps the benefits while you just see from afar with a burned throat as you are sent to start your next project with a new product owner ready to shoot the next load into your mouth.

I also have a math degree, not a Ph.D. though, so I'm just chilling in a regular bank. I've been involved in internal data science projects but as the analyst for the product owner so I took every single chance I had to put my opinion first and sometimes the PO would like my idea and go with it, or sometimes just defer to me if it was a small enough decision that he didn't mind if I chose instead.

All jokes aside decision-making is the mark of the 21st century Rennaissance man. There will always be a cap on what you can earn from other skills. Even the best data scientist can only get paid so much. But if your job is to make decisions, then once you are good enough you can start Amazon or Netflix or whatever the fuck and you'll have infinite potential for infinite money. You have a fucking Ph.D. for fuck's sake why are you not in a hedge fund god damn you make me angry.

Write python scripts that pull data from databases, do something with said data and push the results back to another table. That basically sums it up. The data processing step sometimes involves some kind of machine learning model, but most often it's some sillier data aggregation.

Applied math and other 'STEM' subjects are seen as people who have been tainted. Pure mathematics let their theories of the universe guide novel developments in their mathematical modeling.

Same here. Got my maths degree and now I'm working a boring code monkey job together with guys who don't even know basics of algorithmic complexity. Like they literally discuss how to design an algorithm for some problem which abstractly is just an instance of bipartite graph matching. But of course they never heard these words. When I tell them that there is a standard algorithm, they just tell me it's too abstract and too complicated because "you can't sell math to the customer".

You had been at university for a few years before that. Didn't you realize universities are strategically getting ruined by the humanities majors? I wouldn't have voluntarily stayed in that environment for even a day longer than necessary.
I personally wouldn't rate someone with a PhD higher than someone with a Master degree. A PhD doesn't signify larger achievement or higher capabilities these days. At best the capability to endure absolute bullshit and to do some bullshit yourself.

You know very well it's not.
Are you from Europe?
Are you asking, if you should do the consecutive master course?

Look into the regulations. It may very well be, that you are required to take classes from the mechanical engineering bachelor program, before being able to switch.
It's way easier to simply stay in your original lane, so unless there are pressing needs on your end, it would seem like the best choice. Ask your study advisor for details before making the choice.

For most people most of the time, work sucks. That is why they pay you to do it. If it was fun, they would do it themselves. Occasionally, a very few lucky people end up making a living doing something they like. That is an extremely rare exception. And even people who do something they like for a living don't like it everyday. There are days when they get up and hate the idea of going to work.

Do the best you can at making what you do interesting and challenging and then keep time for yourself outside work. It isn't going to get much better than that.

Similar situation. Did chemistry/biochem, went to work in industry (medical devices rather than pharma). Pretty comfy, only complaint is the absolute mountain of paperwork required for anything medical.
Our current project is entering the end stages so that combined with working from home most days (because pandemic policies) means I haven't actually done any meaningful lab work in a couple weeks, just writing up documents for the FDA/TGA/MDR.
Wish I got paid more though.
