We can't know exactly how caffeine works in the same way that we hardly understand all of the benzos and shit that psychiatrists prescribe. The best way to understand drugs like this is to look at their effects empirically, over long periods of time, ideally in other people and in yourself if you deem the effects in other people to be "safe."
