I suspect the first one will be much smaller, large enough for a large family group and a couple of dozen temporary passengers. It would be easier to build in lunar orbit, and it would make sense to put it into a cycler orbit between Earth and Mars.
This early habitat will probably use a combination of natural and artificial life support systems. It is likely to have a small park with recreational space and potted shrubs and other plants. Most food will probably be grown hydroponically and the meats eaten are likely to be limited to rabbit and fish.
I expect that this habitat will be self sufficient for the most part. Complex equipment and things like medical supplies would need to be imported, though basic herbal remedies could be produced on board. Most environmental systems would be cyclic and there would need to be excess storage of things like plant nutrients, gasses and water.
I am always meaning to produce some concept art but I get confused when I find out aboit things like the buildup of ammonia gasses produced by crops in enclosed spaces.
